Rossi has announced his retirement at the end of the season. I'm sure no-one's surprised, and as a huge fan I agree it's the right choice and maybe he should have considered it earlier, but it's the right decision.

will miss seeing him race but with his own team in all 3 classes I'm sure he'll still be in the paddock for a long time.

Not my intention to sully this thread, but I have never bought into the Rossi hagiography or this GOAT nonsense.

Followed him from the 125 class in which his formidable talent was immediately obvious. As charismatic as Sheene, clinical as Lawson and uncompromising on track as Doohan. His best season for me was 2001 and his first 500cc world title. 2002 and the introduction of the V5 was an absolute farce and the much heralded move to Yamaha in 2004 was accompanied by a choice of three engines and a gazillion changes to the M1 which up until then had been a virtual career wrecker. His vanity motivated move to Ducati was folly in the extreme and despite the desperate revisionist efforts of the Vale-ban and the attempts of his fanatical followers to re-write history, brutally exposed his flaws and his weaknesses in the absence of the substantial comparative advantage that had favoured him for most of his career at the expense of other riders. Regarding him remaining in the paddock, commercially, that's beneficial for DORNA of course, but over the last decade his influence together with the yellow smoke blown up his arse and much of his moronic following that aren't here for the sport has become increasingly toxic.

The actual GOAT? The cards were similarly stacked in Ago's favour, and as much as I loved the holy trinity of King Kenny, Lawson and Rainey - Hailwood could ride anything. That's your man. Aside from that, the most naturally talented riders that I've ever seen are Spencer, Stoner and Marquez.

I'll fondly remember many of Rossi's brilliant rides - trackside Donington 2005 was one of the most incredible wet weather performances I've ever seen, but as a follower of the sport as opposed to the cult of personality, I won't miss the man himself in the slightest.

Sorry.

Don’t be sorry, “greatest of all time” is always relative..🤷🏻‍♂️
Absolutely. It has to be, because different eras are incomparable.

Relatively speaking, Rossi doesn't come close imo because the machinery that he achieved success on was so vastly superior - not even mentioning the Saturday Night Specials courtesy of Michelin.

Find footage of Schwantz astride the RGV500 in the late 80s and early 90s. Practically unrideable. Watching the wild shapes he made on that bike was really something. It was like gravity had gone insane in his little sphere of existence. 93 was a title earned not bought.

If you look at it that way you can rule out anyone that could use disk brakes… 😛

VR46 is what he is...an important and unique racer during the last 26 (!) world championship seasons...and for somebody the GOAT...like ME
But in all honesty, he's not been an "important and unique racer" for the last 26 seasons though has he? And the fact that he's been stealing a living at Yamaha for the past four and depriving other riders of a factory ride is frankly as reprehensible for not only the factory, but Dorna itself.

If he's the 'GOAT' "for you" - then I'm glad he's been the source of so much pleasure. Personally, the sport that I've followed since a young child is bigger than Valentino Rossi - it was here before and it'll continue after long after many of his fair weather glory hunting fans have lost interest. I'm glad to see the back of him and most of them.

Again, apologies if this sounds harsh. Never bought into the Rossi hype.

I’m hopeful we can see him make a successful move into four wheeled racing, ala Pastrana. Seems that’s where his heart is nowadays.

Well he had impressive forays into WRC and has regularly seen off the establishment in his victories at Monza. Unfortunately, despite discussions with M-Sport to run a Ford Fiesta WRC, it hasn't happened for the last two years. It's something we'll see again because I don't think that being a team boss in MotoGP will sate his need to be out on track competing.

Starting the race with a fireball is always intense!
Poor Pedrosa, was happy to see him back on the field and then that happened. He was doing ok too.

Congrats to Martin for his first ever win - great to see so many people winning at the moment. Keeps the championship alive!

Yeah dramatic starting situation and hopefully a soon comeback from Salvadori.
Nevertheless a strong re-race from Pedrosa.
Martin with a great performance and Fabio did the best he can with the Yamaha on these high speed circuit.
Ducati factory riders and Zarco loose massive in the championchip.

Looking forward to go Friday morning to Spielberg.

Very disappointing the manner that Petrucci and Lecuona were dealt with on Saturday. Really felt for Herve Poncharal.

Anyone see the Moto2 race? Superb.
