Where did you ride your FTR today?

This is probably a discussion for another thread. I’ve already highjacked this one enough. I’d like Maxes and Mikes input on this. As far as I am aware you need a certain amount of back pressure from your exhaust. Running a totally open system provides 5 fifths of fuck all back pressure. Tunes aside it’s not behaving like it used to. Shut the throttle before and like I said you rarely needed brakes. Not now.

Regardless of your opinion on removing baffles the fact remains that I ride this bike, I know how much engine braking it had before and after yesterdays dummy spit of the baffles and I’m telling you it has none now.
Whoaaa there fellah. I wasn't doubting you at all and it wasn't my 'opinion' either - simply my observations from removing the baffles on many motorcycles and actually, having the same thing happen to me with them blowing out (on a GS550). Modern pipes are designed to run with them in or out which is why they are removable in many bikes, so I simply couldn't understand why you are experiencing such a pronounced loss of engine braking which has little to do with the exhaust. That's one of the things I really like about the FTR - that the slipper clutch doesn't eliminate this.

I wasn't questioning your word - I hope you get it sorted soon. Actually, I don't, that thing sounds evil! 😈 🤘

The cops won’t be very happy with it. It was borderline before. And I also noticed the inner mesh is working it’s way out as well. So for the time being it will be garaged and not ridden. Last thing I need is that coming out and going through someone’s windscreen.

Mine is as loud. I haven't had any issues yet - but there was a time when they would have been all over it. We don't have so many traffic cops on the road anymore in the UK...digital policing. I don't know which is worse.

Regarding other road users - I feel so much safer with this exhaust.

Fine looking system. I hope you get it sorted soon.

No doubt that loud pipes save lives…I’m very happy with the TOCE…changed the bike and the tune is brilliant but the way it is now I’ll be on the hit list with most of the Harley boys…the cops here will give you a fair bit of slack but when it’s ear splitting they’ll defect it. Just waiting on a reply from TOCE. They do have an updated can which does away with the threaded retainer. We’ll see what happens. 👍😎🇦🇺

Loud pipes earn tickets too...
I used to have a super loud Harris Pipes system on my FXR and when the cop gave me the ticket he said he heard me and came looking for me. He was a gnarly old sargent and only ticketed me for speeding 🙄

Yeah mate I’ve fallen foul over the years with different bikes…that’s why it will stay in the shed for a while.

I'm confused, we must have different definitions of engine braking.

Engine braking is due to the piston pulling a vacuum on the intake stroke (or at least wayyy less air) because the plate in the throttle body is effectively closed.

Engine braking is all about the intake side of the equation, not the exhaust...
^^ this. And the mass of the rotating parts I guess (crankshaft, flywheel, etc)
