The dilemma of choosing a new motorcycle

Not bad at all…I’ve always been a Beemer man from way back. Can’t say I’ve kept up with them over the years but that looks flash…will be excited to know what Tony thinks Tash…👍😎🇦🇺

so - things have taken an interesting turn.
As you all know, buying a bike is as much about your heart as your head.
Yesterday we went to one of the bike stores to look at a 2nd hand Triumph Tiger 800 XRT that had come in, someone had traded it for a new Tiger and it came with all the panniers & a top box.
Initially he was stoked because he could flat foot it which is very helpful for a top heavy bike.
but he also said he didn't think it looked as nice as the Versys or the Multistrada.
hes also gone off the BMW for a similar reason - after looking at it more, doesn't think it's as nice.

So the list now is only 3 bikes:
Multistrada V2 (or 950S if we find a 2nd hand one)
Versys 1000

and
2022 FTR.
that's right, the person who told me repeatedly he doesn't want an FTR has now added a 2022 in white smoke to his list.
He rode mine yesterday and (his words) 'i instantly felt comfortable, and this thing goes like stink.'
He IS going to be sensible and wait till he's ridden all 3 bikes though, which is proving a small problem.
No Versys available for a test ride for a few weeks. No V2's at all, would need to actually order one and have 'subject to test ride' on the purchase clause.
only a 2022 Base FTR available for test ride but that will be enough in terms of feeling the different throttle response.
so we're still probably a month away from a purchase especially as no-one has called about the Harley yet.

Ah well you are both taking the rite path. Buying with your head far out ways buying with your heart or impulse I should say. Research is your key and your both doing that so I hope it all goes well and Tony finds the bike he really wants. The Harley will go, it just needs the rite home…👍😎

Any chance of trading in the Harley? My dealership is giving generous trades on well cared for, clean motorcycles.

well that's nice, but trade ins work very differently here, especially as while Adelaide is a capital city, it's population is much smaller than Melbourne or Sydney.
People don't go to an Indian or Kawasaki dealership to buy Harleys. The only place that will offer you something half decent will be a Harley dealership, but he doesn't want a Harley.
He was going to trade his MV Augusta Brutale in for his Roadster. The dealer offered $6k. we sold it for $12,500.
When he was going to buy his VFR, the dealer offered $3K on his CB1300. He sold it for $8K.
Sure we could trade it. But I'd probably need to find another $16,000 to make up the difference on whatever he is buying.
Not worth the loss - better to wait and get a decent amount for it.
with no bikes to test ride it really doesn't matter.

Understood - Due to the short supply of new machines in the showroom right now, the demand for pre-owned bikes in the US is pretty good.

yes we've seen that one. I'm quite concerned about how blue the pipes are, suggests she has had that slip on without a cat for quite some time with no tune on it.
If it's still around when the Harley finally sells, we'll get in touch with her.

demand for pre-owned bikes here is good too, just not from dealers. they are still offering bugger all.
One offered us $10K for the Harley. We said no.
this is the first time it's taken us more than 1 week to sell a bike. I am guessing that the model Tony has just isn't in demand - people are all buying tourers cause they can't go overseas instead.

but it will eventually sell, no rush.

When I bought the Rocket 3 there were a handful of Roadsters here in Perth, they were my fall bike if I didn't get a slice of the Rocket pie. Now I'd have to look around for a Roadster.
I bought the FTR, demo bike because Triumph did a price rise on the Rocket 3, it could have been my first brand new bike.
This is 8000 K's of blue, just after the cat delete and tune. Indian Mandurah told me that no one has blown up an FTR motor.

Tonight, the husband had a test ride on a Kawasaki Versys 1000.
he was concerned about the height but it was a brand new demo so no suspension adjustment and he was able to put 1 foot down flat, or 2 feet he was on the balls of his feet.
He was also concerned it would be top heavy, but other than a u-turn in the car park, he didn't notice the weight at all.
I went along on my FTR, and as the bike was in the south of Adelaide I led him through some 80kph roads with corners rated at around 50-60.
He had 20 mins on the bike which wasn't bad, initially he said it felt VERY comfy but at the end of the ride said that he felt the edges of the seat were digging in a little. Could just be that it's different to his current bike.
Power was insanely smooth - he was expecting to feel torque like he does on the HD or my FTR (or even the Hornet) but he would twist the throttle and suddenly be doing 'whoops' speed without feeling like the bike even sped up lol.
quickshifter was a new experience, he liked it but also said he wasn't sure if he even changed gears half the time.

Overall, he liked it and it's definitely an option. Got the price for the bike with panniers, a little under $25K.

Hoping to ride a couple of other bikes on Saturday all going well.

We considered a 2nd FTR but he thinks he'll ride like a loony haha.
so - funny story......

Today he took a 2022 FTR base model for a ride. After about 5 mins he said 'oh man this is a LOT better than that Kawasaki'.

being shorter than me, the seat height was a lot better for him. we went up the same tight twisty road I did my test ride on and it was even MORE flickable than mine due to the smaller wheels.

the surging that was standard on the 2019 model didn't exist - he tried to make it surge and just couldn't. we got back and he was grinning like a kid.

the offer was there to test ride the Multistrada V4 just to get a feel for seating position etc (the engine is very different to the V2) but he wasn't interested. having learnt the lesson from missing out on a V2S after wanting to wait until the HD is sold, we popped a deposit down on the white one that was in the store.

they're holding it for us for a week or two while we try to move the Harley. At worst we will trade it in.

I've gone from superbike-barred motorcycles, to clip-on'd motorcycles and I am back to an FTR with it's early superbike, 1980 circa, riding position and it rocks.

Relatively light and the 19" wheel doesn't help flickability (wider 'bars help), but it doesn't interfere with the pace I am able to ride at, and the 80 lbs of torque is only about 10 lbs out of the ZRX (at about fifty #heavier) and 20 lbs short of the 'busa (also about fifty lbs heavier).

So on tight stuff, the FTR totally holds it's own, over 60mph the other bike's rule, but as I get older I appreciate the slower stuff.

Had a guy come over Thursday that spent over an hour going over the HD with a torch checking for rust in the tank, on the exhaust, checking decibel reading of the pipes, literally everything you could look at he did. Never had ANYONE spend that much time looking over a bike.
After hearing him say 'well I've got $11K (bike was advertised for $15,000) and I need to check with my wife about getting some more cash', he didn't make any kind offer at all and left. Today he let us know 'my work has fallen through I can't buy a bike now'. We're not convinced that's the case.

Have dropped the price again, if you're in Australia and after a cruiser it's now the cheapest Roadster in the country lol.

We really need to sell it this week because we have a deposit down on the FTR and are picking it up on Saturday....
