Lowering springs

Hi,I'm going to be fitting the lowering springs to fork and rear shock,my question is about fitting the fork springs,I've watched the video on how to disassemble the forks for seal etc replacement,but is it necessary to remove the legs if I'm just changing the springs ?
It seams the top nut comes off the damper rod ,I would only need to get the handlebars out of the way,

It will be a massive pita to do them on the bike though. As you need to have some one put almost all their body weight on the tool to get the top cap loose from the internal rod
